I’m Benjamin Lloyd. Let me tell you about my three acts . . .
My Act 1
Age 0 - 30ish
Scene 1. Born in 1962 in New York City. Mom was modern dancer and dad was an arts administrator.
Scene 2. Mom leaves at age 3. Instability followed by new life with Dad and stepmom. Academic and creative success,
Scene 3. New York City after grad school. Disappointment, addiction, and recovery.
My Act 2
Age 30ish - 60ish
Scene 1. Philadelphia, marriage, kids, tenure-track teaching position at major university. Professional acting in Philly, NYC and other places in the world.
Scene 2. Denied tenure, marriage ends, financial stress. Single dad raising two kids.
Scene 3. Creation of my nonprofit with major foundation support. Commitment to long form improvisation as the center of my creative journey. Beginning of my interest in working with people with developmental disabilities, and using performance creativity as a consultant to business and nonprofits.
Scene 1. Nonprofit runs out of money and I turn the consulting program in to a stand-alone LLC. Empty nest. I know my Act 2 in Philly is over, but what now?
Scene 2. I make a huge course correction, move to Boulder to help out my mom (living alone at 88), and enroll in Naropa University’s masters program in clinical counseling. I start a coaching business for others looking ahead to their act 3s.

My Act 3
Age 60ish - ???
Ben's bioBenjamin Lloyd is in the class of 2028 for the M.A. program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Naropa University, Mindfulness-based Transpersonal track. From 2011 to 2024 he founded and ran the nonprofit Bright Invention, dedicated to using improvisation to empower people and groups to unlock their potential. Before that, he was a professional actor and acting teacher for many years, and now runs bxlloyd consulting which uses the power of play and applied improvisation to support the transformation of groups and teams. Ben’s other work includes directing and performing long form improvisation, teaching improv to a variety of ages and abilities, and working with the disability community and other marginalized populations. He has a BA and MFA from Yale University, and a certificate from Cornell University in Diversity and Inclusion.
